Solo evening with the jazz bassist Renaud Garcia-Fons


When Renaud Garcia-Fons and his group performed the premiere of the new film score to Lotte Reiniger's „Die Abenteuer des Prinzen Achmed“ on the Bauhaus stage, it was not just a highlight of the 2011 Festival, but undoubtedly one of the great moments in the history of the Kurt Weill Festival. And it is certain to be another unmissable event when this unique artist returns to Dessau for a solo recital. „Tout Seul“ will offer festival-goers a magical and poetic evening concert at a very special location – the Marienkirche.

Enthusiastic audiences around the world confirm the virtuosity of Renaud Garcia-Fons, and the intimate relationship he has built up with his instrument. Thus it comes as no surprise when he says: „I am obsessed by certain rhythms, by my bass, and by everything that happens between very high and very low notes. One day I had the crazy idea to become my own orchestra, something I had always dreamt of. It was like I made a bet with myself to give a solo concert.“

Perhaps that sounds like we are in for a virtuosic evening of musical fireworks, and certainly Renaud Garcia-Fons is a master of his instrument. The French, in their inimitably guttural fashion, would simply describe him as „merveilleux“ or „incroyable“. But in fact the bassist humbly places his astonishing technical abilities at the service of the music: this is a sparkling performer with real substance!
