“Jazz music knocked off its perch. The waltz takes its place – the negros are fleeing“: so ran the headline of the satirical magazine „Simplicissimus“ in 1933. Following the Nazi's rise to power ever more Jews, critical intellectuals and artists are forced to save their lives and careers by leaving Germany. However, not all of those suffering persecution or restriction are willing to abandon the country in which they have laid down deep roots. They undergo an „internal“ emigration, following a path of adaption or resistance against the dictatorship and its henchmen. A strictly one-dimensional perspective will not help us understand this gloomy age or the people in it; and so this evening turns the spotlight onto the music and literature of those who chose to stay at home.
