„Life journeys – Voyages à Paris“
ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE
An evening of song featuring music by Kurt Weill, Francis Poulenc, Norbert Glanzberg, Duke Ellington, Cole Porter and many others.
Vocalist: Ute Gfrerer
Piano: Christian Koch
Many of those who fled the murderous Nazi regime were stricken and stunned by their dreadful turn of fate. But often the exiled artists did not lose their voices – they may in fact have gained a renewed vitality to speak out through their art; they did not resign themselves to their grim new existence, but fought back in their writings and compositions, with their singing and performing. Ute Gfrerer allows these persecuted individuals to speak through their wonderful music, artists whose only crime was to be Jewish and to make people happy with their art. She describes life journeys that lead to Paris, such as that of Norbert Glanzberg, who wrote unforgotten chansons for Piaf. Or indeed Kurt Weill, who composed such unforgettable songs in Paris such as „Yukali“, „Le grand Lustucru“ or „J'attends un navire“. The evening's accompanist is Christian Koch, whom audiences may remember from the Broadway-Weill evening „One life to live“ at the 2009 Festival.
The Artist-in-Residence will be presented by LOTTO Sachsen-Anhalt.
