„From Rhine and Spree
to Seine and Hudson“

A musical-literary trip with Heine and Weill

Recitation: Bernhard Bauer
Soprano: Irmelin Sloman
Piano: Thomas Palm
Cello: Franziska Leube

“When the Lord in Heaven feels a little bored, he opens the window and looks down on the boulevards of Paris.“ – a bon mot by Heinrich Heine to perfectly describe the charm of the French capital. This „last poet of the Romantic age“ was at the same time its vanquisher. He raised everyday speech to a poetic form, turned travel reportage into an art form, and his writings display an elegant levity previously foreign to the serious world of German literature. His works are translated and set to music more frequently than perhaps any other poet of the German language.

While both Heine and Weill became exiled from Germany, only one – Heine – suffered under this enforced emigration. For him Paris was merely a way station, while Weill was happy to settle there. Both men were ahead of their time; they were artistic innovators who clearly belonged to the avant-garde. On the journey „From Rhine and Spree to Seine and Hudson“ you will learn much more – just don't miss the boat!
