Dagmar Manzel first explored the songs of Friedrich Hollaender while still a student at the "Ernst Busch" Academy of Drama in Berlin – and she's never been able to get them out of her head! As a native "Berliner", Hollaender's lyrics and his music simply "got under my skin," reports the charismatic theatre, film and television actress: "On the one hand there is this earthy Berlin milieu, and on the other hand this incredible glamour".
Dagmar Manzel's repertoire includes evergreens such as the songs that made an international star of Marlene Dietrich: "Falling in love again (Can't help it)", "Menschenkind" ("Wenn ich mir was wünschen dürfte...") or "Peter, Peter, komm zu mir zurück". These are complemented by lesser-known early works by the composer as well as songs from Hollaender's years of intermittent financial hardship from 1933 onwards, first in Paris and then in Hollywood.
Dagmar Manzel's Friedrich Hollaender programme "Menschenskind", which is also available on CD, celebrated its premiere in February 2014 with the orchestra of the Komische Oper Berlin. Later, with a more intimate line-up of three musicians, it became a smash hit at the Beethoven Festival in Bonn, the Rheingau Music Festival, the Teatro Real de Madrid, Frankfurt Opera, the Staatsoperette Dresden and the Deutsches Theater München. Now it can also be enjoyed by visitors to the Kurt Weill Festival.
