WANTED – Dagmar Pecková
alias Mackie Messer

A revue on the life of Kurt Weil

Conductor & Piano: Jan Kučera
Producer: Tomáš Ságl
Vocals: Dagmar Pecková, Jiří Hájek
Dance: Marta Trpišovská, Michael Vodenka
Epoque Quartet & Orchestra
Miroslav Hloucal Jazz Band

No, Dagmar Pecková was never going to be a “normal” opera singer. “It was never enough for me to just express myself with my voice,” says the Czech mezzo-soprano in an interview. And so she was predestined to inhabit the cabaret stage with its ambiguity and cheeky humour, but also the revue show with its saucy songs, its lively wordplay, its danced emotions, its bright lights and glamour. Dagmar Pecková found a congenial partner in Kurt Weill: She discovered in Weill of the 1920s a brilliant composer with the facility to write intelligent yet accessible music for the masses: “He abandoned the affectations of the late Romantic music that filled concert halls and salons, instead writing original music for ‘normal’ people.”

Thus Dagmar Pecková left the world of national opera, concert halls and festivals to explore the genre of “popular” music. The cabaret revue Wanted premiered in Prague in 2017. The singer slipped into the role of Mack the Knife, thrilling Prague audiences along with her partners such as Jiří Hájek, Marta Trpišovská, Michal Vodenka, the Epoque Quartet and Orchestra and the Miroslav Hloucal Jazz Band. Conductor and pianist Jan Kučera conjures up the atmosphere of Berlin bars, revue theatres, clubs and houses of ill repute, providing the unmistakable sound that many fans of this supposedly “golden” era have grown fond of. And Dagmar Pecková brings back to life those brash, sentimental, cool and seductive divas of the demimonde, for whom Kurt Weill’s songs were written. A world of melancholic pleasure, whose residents, despite their brassy self-confidence, never forgot that they were dancing on a volcano.
