A singular symphonic work is the final piece at the opening concert of the Kurt Weill Festival 2018: Ludwig van Beethoven's Seventh Symphony in A major, Op. 92. Since its premiere in Vienna in 1813, this work has been the object of diverse, at times contradictory, interpretations: While Richard Wagner understood Beethoven's Seventh Symphony to be an "apotheosis of dance", the work reminded Robert Schumann of a wedding celebration. A few prominent commentators later described the work as an "Apotheosis of the March" or an "Exultation of Humour", as a musical illustration of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's Wilhelm Meister or even as a "Victory of the Symphony over the tyranny of rhythm". Confusing? Quite! While Beethoven's music conforms to all of these descriptions, it cannot be fully explained by them. To experience the Seventh Symphony alongside excerpts from the Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny – probably the most revolutionary and controversial collaboration between Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht – is in itself an exciting undertaking.

But when Till Brönner, Artist-in-Residence of the Kurt Weill Festival 2018, makes his debut in Dessau, we are guaranteed an evening of thrilling music. This exceptional musician, who has dipped his feet into all conceivable stylistic waters, is a recipient of the German Record Critics' Award and has performed in the White House at the invitation of Barack Obama. At this Opening Concert of the Kurt Weill Festival 2018, Till Brönner will present his very own unique blend of Beethoven and Weill, classical and contemporary music, electronic and pop in a dedicated section of the concert.
