The journey begins with Weill’s departure from Germany: Der Silbersee was the last work to be written in the country of his birth. The premiere took place in February 1933, just after the seizure of power by the Nazis, who denounced and quickly banned the work. Excerpts from Marie Galante document Weill’s brief stay in France. In Two Folksongs of the New Palestine, Weill takes a close look at his Jewish roots. The excerpts from Knickerbocker Holiday mark his arrival on Broadway.
The Four Walt Whitman Songs take centre stage in the evening’s second half. The unique poetry of Walt Whitman inspired Kurt Weill to write heartfelt, intimate compositions. Excerpts from Weill’s American opera Street Scene will conclude the gala.
On stage you can enjoy world star Rolando Villazón making his Dessau debut, our Artist-in-Residence Vladimir Korneev as well as the young, highly talented Danielle Beckvermit, a finalist at the Lotte Lenya Competition in 2019.
