Star guests in Dessau

Music by Kurt Weill

Vocals: Eleanor Reissa
Trumpet: Frank London
Piano: Anthony Coleman
Bass: Greg Cohen
Percussion: Billy Martin

Dessau’s music lovers can enjoy a truly unique concert featuring two highly acclaimed Broadway stars: Grammy winner Frank London, recognized throughout the world with his band “The Klezmatics”, presents together with the author, actress and singer Eleanor Reissa an exciting programme that turns the spotlight on the “American” Weill.

This medley of hit songs as well as less well known numbers in original new arrangements reflects the broad spectrum of influences that inspired Weill: From scintillating lyricists such as Ira Gershwin to jazz, American popular music and European experimental forms, from theatrical and Jewish traditions to the ethnic and cultural diversity of New York of the 1940s.

Frank London and Eleanor Reissa are closely associated with Yiddish culture. London is the composer of Hatuey: Memory of Fire, the first new Yiddish opera in 100 years, about a refugee from Ukraine who published a Yiddish newspaper in Cuba. The work premiered in Havana in 2017. Eleanor Reissa, whose mother tongue is Yiddish, is a doyenne of Yiddish theatre in New York. She will interpret a series of songs by Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht in her native language.

Kurt Weill’s triumphant career in New York is one that only a select group of emigrants from Europe replicated. He regarded the USA as his new home, successfully conquering Broadway and establishing the notion of a stylistically diverse “American opera”.
