Long regarded as the “new Marlene”, Ute Lemper is anything but a carbon copy of the great Berlin actress and chansonnière. But in Paris in 1988 at age 23, while basking in the huge success of the musical Cabaret, she enjoyed a “rendezvous” with Marlene: For three hours they chatted on the phone after Marlene Dietrich had sent Ute Lemper a postcard. The conversation revolved around Marlene’s life, her work and her style, her love for Rilke, her complicated relationship with Germany, her grief and her passions. Then in 1992 in Berlin’s Theater des Westens, Ute Lemper first sang the role that had made Marlene a star in 1928, namely Lola in Der blaue Engel. Only six days previously, Marlene Dietrich had died in Paris ...
The programme “Rendezvous with Marlene” transports the audience into the past, letting them eavesdrop on the conversation with this global icon. Ute Lemper tells Marlene’s story and sings fabulous songs from all stages of her life, from the Berlin cabaret years up to her collaboration with the American composer and songwriter Burt Bacharach. But it also reminds us that in 1916/17 Marlene Dietrich and her mother lived in Dessau with relatives; she went to school here and was given a diary by her aunt Vally von Losch, which she then kept religiously her whole life.
The Artist-in-Residence will be presented by
