For almost 50 years Dennis Russell Davies has regularly conducted the world’s great orchestras and, as a pianist and chamber musician, has been an influential advocate of contemporary music. Together with the MDR Symphony Orchestra, this newly appointed Artistic Director of the Brno Philharmonic presents a programme that combines the advantages of a large-scale ensemble with the native free spirit of jazz musicians, an idea that Kurt Weill also championed and to which we owe immortal evergreens.

The orchestra is bringing along a very special soloist in the form of 24-year-old trumpeter Simon Höfele, who has already won many prizes and been invited to appear at top international venues. Höfele’s CD Mysteries, for which he was awarded the German Record Critics’ Prize, was described by critic Eleonore Büning as a “firework of fresh sounds” performed with “passion and perfection”. Höfele’s wide repertoire ranges from the classical concertos of Joseph Haydn and Johann Nepomuk Hummel to contemporary music. In Dessau he will pay homage to the legendary jazz trumpeter Miles Davis by performing his Sketches of Spain. The audience can look forward to further Spanish flair with arrangements of Joaquín Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez and a piece from the ballet El amor brujo by Manuel de Falla.
